In 2007 Prescott, Arizona, Eric Marsh of the Prescott Fire Department is frustrated fighting forest fires when the Type 1 or "Hotshot" front line forest fire fighting crews from afar overrule his operational suggestions to his area's sorrow. To change that, Marsh gets approval from the Mayor to attempt to organize an unprecedented certified municipal-based Hotshot crew for Prescott. To that end, Marsh needs new recruits, which includes the young wastrel, Brendan McDonough, to undergo the rigorous training and qualification testing for the most dangerous of fire fighting duty. Along the way, the new team meets the challenge and the hailed Granite Mountain Hotshots are born. In doing so, all the men, especially McDonough, are changed as new experience and maturity is achieved in fire-forged camaraderie. All this is put to the test in 2013 with the notorious Yarnell Hill Fire that will demand efforts and sacrifices no one can ignore.

This movie is based on true stories and true people. The events that the movie based on aren't well know but still worth being experienced.

The movie followed a team of firefighters throughout years of training and fighting. Even though the story is spanned a couple of years, yet it still stayed dynamic and doesn't felt staled. The movie also successful in creating a strong ending by building up emotional investment and raised stake for the final conflict.

Unfortunately that the movie isn't without fault. I felt like most of obstacles felt as if they were solved too easily. The movie also failed to explain technical details and make viewers understand what the team were doing during each firefighting.

The story was compelling and gut-wrenching, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The finer sense of humour was tucked in nicely beside the bitter side of life. Real life at its best.

It is not often that I would recommend a 'based on real life' movie, but I would definitely commend Only the Brave.

"Based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, a group of elite firefighters who risk everything to protect a town from a historic wildfire."

First rate intense performances with few exceptions from all the main players.

This is a gut-wrenching yet compelling drama.

As the concluding credits are about to start the roll call at the end reveals the real bravery of those being portrayed:

Based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots firefighters division, this film strikes a very emotional and moving chord. What's surprising is the fact that it's every bit a character piece and focuses as much if not more on relationships as it does on fighting wildfires. The main focus is on Eric and Amanda Marsh (Josh Brolin and Jennifer Connelly) and Brendan (Miles Teller). It successfully deals with marital issues as well as redemption arcs.

Honestly, if you make it through this movie without shedding a tear then start questioning your empathy level. The final act is flat out emotionally wrecking. All three lead actors are deliver soul turning performances and really should be in awards consideration. The supporting cast is also very good, especially Jeff Bridges. Overall, this a worthy lasting tribute to some very brave men.
