In an age of mystery and superstition, how would the people of Gotham react to a weird creature of the night, a bat-garbed vigilante feared by the guilty and the innocent alike? The very first Elseworlds tale re-imagines the Dark Knight detective in Victorian times and pits him against the infamous murderer Jack the Ripper.

I never expected this movie to be good but, I still expected this movie to be at least somewhat entertaining on a superficial level. But somehow this movie still managed to disappoint me despite having extremely low expectations for this film. The art style is uninspired, the animation is cheap and lazy, the voice acting is hilariously bad and the story is not engaging in the slightest. The very first action scene in the movie featuring Batman, was awfully directed and felt as if it was directed by an amateur. However, I know this isn't the case as this movie was directed by Sam Liu, a veteran of DC animation. So, I can only chalk the poor quality of this movie up to the creative team not really giving a shit. This movie was obviously rushed and made on the cheap so that DC can meet their quota of releasing at least 1 DC animated movie every year. I really don't understand why DC is doing this. I would understand if this was a mainstream live-action theatrical release made to appeal to casual audiences, as those usually make a lot of money regardless of quality( save maybe for Justice League), but the DC animated movies are made specifically for adult comic book fans. DC animated movies were successful in the past because of their quality, but the quality just isn't there anymore, which is why interest in these movies have dipped. Kids can't watch this movie either, as it is rated R. However, the art style gives the impression that this movie is for kids, which it is definitely not. The art style will also turn some adult viewers off. So , who exactly is this movie for? It does not appeal to anyone. It's like DC is going out of its way to sabotage their own animation department. DC has another animated movie coming out this year featuring the suicide squad, and the trailer made me want to gorge my eyes out. it also has the same ugly, kid friendly art style, despite being rated R. I don't understand why DC is rushing these films out, despite no one going out in droves to see them. It seems that DC forgot that quality is what people want, not quantity. Ultimately, I will have to give this movie a 1/10 as there is not a single good thing that I can say about this movie, even if I tried really hard. If DC doesn't give a shit, why should I?

Just watched this movie and as someone in their 50s who grew up and accepted the new incarnations and evolution of the Batman I was very disappointed. Yes I know this is set in the past but a regression in technology doesn't mean the character has to regress also.

I felt that the Batman in this movie was just a pale reflection of Sherlock Holmes and a powered down version at that. He even had his own version of Baker Street Irregulars which was just a bit derivative. While providing recognition of one of Batmans most central archetypes is appreciated it progressed past the point being of a homage but instead made the principal character of the Batman feel like just a cheap copy of the original..

To be fair the film is competently done and is watchable. The voices were well done and filled out the characters to a degree. I even enjoyed the song by Selina Kyle in the theatre as well as using the voice and character of Harley Quinn in a cameo role as an old drunk woman. I did not however appreciate the dead fish eyes of Bruce Wayne that again made him seem more 2 dimensional and detracted from my enjoyment.

One of the biggest failure in this movie was the misuse and under use of characters like Poison Ivy and Dr Hugo Strange who were just passing through this movie. Don't blink or you'll miss them.

Coming from the UK I've seen every permutation of the Sherlock Holmes legend in the media and this was a mediocre offering at best. I shouldn't have had to keep reminding myself that this was a Batman movie and not a Sherlock Holmes movie.

I gave it a 6 mostly for the concept of the film and the atmosphere which was really great but when the movie ended it still felt like something was really missing and I couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was until a few hours later... It was the actual detective work.

Before the film started my greatest question was how the hell is he going to solve any mysteries without his super powerful bat-computer and I was looking forward to see how it will play out. It turns out there was little to none of that detective work and the Bat figures out who the killer is by pure luck and nothing else, which is really a shame for the world's greatest detective.

I did enjoy other parts of the movie, but, I cannot tell you what without giving any spoilers. You should watch it yourself and you will know what I'm talking about just don't put your expectations too high for the general outcome, it's definitely not a 10 or a 9.

Gotham by Gaslight tells a classic murder mystery in a DC elseworld during Victorian age.The animated remake of classic graphic novel beautifully puts audience in depth of this mystery.
