Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha-an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.

I was really excited about seeing this, read about how the graphic novels have influenced so much science fiction we see now, the teasers looked amazing and then went to see it. The effects are amazing no doubt about that unfortunately these cannot save a film with a terrible script and seriously wrong casting. There is meant to be an unspoken tension/attraction between the two main characters but both were awful no chemistry at all. A few funny moments but not enough to save this Turkey! Seriously save your time and money watch something else.

One day Luc Besson woke up and said "Do you know what the world needs? A psychaedelic version of The Phantom Menace." Naturally it was a complete flop. Totally incomprehensible story telling with unlikeable characters. Visual imagination requires logical explanation to excite an audience. Maybe it makes sense to Luc but audiences aren't amazed if they don't understand why they are watching this crazy stuff.

I rate this at about 7.5/10 (IMDb), but for "R.T." I would say it's more like a solid 80%. Thing is, it's not really an awesome story- line nor is it a bad one and it's certainly not a terrible one! The acting critics should go lock themselves in a dumpster and throw themselves away. Dead serious: people who criticize a movie on its actors don't understand how movies are made. A scene is repeated until the director says it's OK. On that regard I have to say that a movie has to focus on immersion/character depth for acting quality to be a serious point. This movie does not do that and never makes an attempt to give the viewer the impression it's trying to. There is absolutely no attempt whatsoever to be taken seriously in this movie. That's what makes it a good movie; it's honest. It's lighthearted similar to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Also like that series, the movie knows when to take a serious tone.

I've seen worse plots and worse movies get higher reviews... even the highest reviews. This movie definitely deserves a 7/10, clearly. It's not the best yet it's not bad at all. There's no reason for it to be approaching a SIX on IMDb and even lower on R.T.. The only reason is because U.S. critics have destroyed it and for good reason. Valerian as per Wikipedia "it is both the most expensive non- American and independent film ever made." Some sources have said that it "flopped" and EuropaCorp is "struggling" as a result. Don't be fooled. EuropaCorp was struggling WELL BEFORE they released this. This movie has, in fact, SAVED them. Their budget was $180m and they Box Officed over $225m. For a non-Hollywood company that is a LOT. Furthermore, unlike Hollywood companies they don't skew their revenue for tax avoidance. Hollywood feels threatened with this movie because it means they are no longer the only ones in town that can make a good CGI movie with a good story and make bank while doing it. That's the ONLY reason this movie is rated so badly and it deserves me 10/10 because it's massively underrated.

TL;DR: It's underrated so watch it. Hollywood sucks, that's why it's underrated.
